Listening (witnessing) and silence are critical facets of any relationship. The evening will be as much about making as it will about listening(witnessing). As such, whoever participates will be invited to pay attention to what is unfolding so as to allow reciprocity to be the ground for action. Sound and movement will be the primary creative modalities explored, but the evening is multi modal and open to all creative vehicles ie lighting, costumes, culinary and scent experiences, text, cuddling, dog and cats(birds and rats), dreaming, kissing and telling, kissing and not telling etc.

Intimacy and joy are also keystones for the arc of the evening, no one is a non participatory aspect at this event. Even the “passive audience” is co creating the “other” that is the mind of the situation we will become. Also…it’s chill , we are chill people, we are just trying to have some fun you know?

Marinthia Gutiérrez is an artist from Tijuana based in Los Angeles. Filmmaking is her primordial practice and her experience with dance and the plastic arts are central to her process. Physicality is of essence in her films, choosing to only work with film and analogue techniques to get closer to re-discovery the beauty of tangibility for an immaterial art form, and to experience time in a different way.

Wendy Zhuo is a Singaporean actor and artist based in Los Angeles. Her work moves between stage, screen, and movement with a practice rooted in the body and drawing from Butoh and traditional performance forms. She is drawn to the body as a site of memory, where personal and collective histories surface.

echo is an intermediary to the spirits remembering a needed way of being: sincerity, simplicity, and care.

Musicians:

David Kendall (computer, electric guitar, cümbüş) has worked in southern California’s underground for several decades, as an improviser, composer, designer and programmer. He combines an open, physical approach to playing that deconstructs atavistic musical gestures via performance and sampling. He has explored psychoacoustic phenomenon including different tones, binaural beats, and spatialized auditory illusions. David has collaborated with and supported various noise artists and improvisers over the years, throughout Califonia and on the east coast.

It is Sunday, March 22, 2026 and sunlight warms the auditorium. We are at Finn Hall in Berkeley throwing a 98th birthday party for Tatsumi Hijikata.

I’m huddling in the corner making tea when Hiroko points to a big red peace flag in the corner and tells me to get it. Before driving up from Los Angeles I prepared by making tiny peace flags in my tiny studio. I started out sewing them, and when that took too long I followed Hiroko’s instructions to make homemade glue out of rice. (When Hiroko tells you to do something she is right.)

I take the flag and start to carry it to Hiroko, when I realize that this is the time in the program when someone needs to become this person:

So I take the red flag and climb on the platform and start waving.

In November, Koichi Tamano danced across the veils and became an ancestor. An astral river swept him away. As I watch his students perform I think of how ancestors live on through their teachings.

We carry a golden wheel down to the red gym mat, where we collapse and dissolve into water-bodies, opening up the center of the room for solo-performance-offerings as the peace flag waves on.

As dancers presented themselves to YiYaSaKa, I considered the distinction between performance and offering. As I moved to dance, my body feels the discernment.

On this day of YiYaSaKa I feel performance as an entry point for stepping into being witnessed. As we dance on, we cross into an ephemeral place of transcendence. My body remembering a lesson from an ancestor I received in a dream.
